His son, James Ryder was illiterate (his signature as witness to his daughter Harriett's wedding was a cross) so the name was probably changed by clerks in Australia.1 He was baptized on 29 January 1788 at All Saints, Little Shelford, Cambridgeshire, England.3 He was the son of John Rider and Alice Elborn.2 He married Sarah Leeland on 16 November 1807 at All Saints, Little Shelford, Cambridgeshire, England.2,4 He made his mark in the parish register at both of his marriages.
