     James Ryder was baptized on 10 January 1819 in Little Shelford, Cambridgeshire, England.2,3 He was the son of Thomas Rider and Mary Lofts.4,2 His surname was sometimes spelt as Rider.5 James Ryder appeared on the 1841 Census in the household of Thomas Rider at House 077, Little Shelford, Cambridgeshire, England, and Mary Lofts, Charlotte Rider, Alexander Rider, Thomas Rider and Jane Rider lived in the same house.6 James Ryder married Ann Gates, daughter of James Gates and Sarah Dear, on 25 September 1841 in Little Shelford, Cambridgeshire, England.7,2 James Ryder resided on 24 January 1851 in Cross Street, Little Shelford, Cambridgeshire, England.8 In the 1851 Census, James Ryder shows as principal resident at Burgess Terrace, Little Shelford, Cambridgeshire, England, with Ann Gates his wife, George Ryder his son, Mary Ann Ryder his daughter.9 James Ryder resided on 13 October 1854 in Cross Street, Little Shelford, Cambridgeshire, England.10 He and Ann Gates immigrated on 16 December 1854 to Moreton Bay, Queensland, Australia, with Harriett Ryder, Mary Ann Ryder and George Ryder aboard the General Hewitt.11 18 January 1855 Cross Street, Little Shelford, Cambridgeshire, England James Ryder is still listed as the occupier of this cottage even though he arrived in Moreton Bay in the preceeding December.10 He was a farmer.      Ann Gates was baptized on 18 May 1823 in Shepreth, Cambridgeshire, England.2,3 She was the daughter of James Gates and Sarah Dear.4 Ann Gates was a servant in the house of William and Ruth Clear, a farming family in Little Shelford. On 6 June 1841 in Little Shelford, Cambridgeshire, England.5 She appeared on the 1841 Census in the household of William Clear at House 058, Little Shelford, Cambridgeshire, England, and Ruth Nutter, Ellen Clear, Mary Clear, Mary Freeman, James Gurner and Sarah Webb lived in the same house.6 Ann Gates married James Ryder, son of Thomas Rider and Mary Lofts, on 25 September 1841 in Little Shelford, Cambridgeshire, England.7,8 Her married name was Ann Ryder. In the 1851 Census Ann Gates is shown as living at Burgess Terrace, Little Shelford, Cambridgeshire, England with her husband James Ryder.
