Theme Thursday - Building

Berrima is about an hour and a half's drive south of Sydney. It is one of those villages that was meant for great things but then by-passed by road and railway. Rather than go to sleep, it is now a mecca for antique and country craft enthusiasts.

At the center of this peaceful little village is this impressive sandstone courthouse, which was the site of the first trial by jury in the colony of New South Wales. Right nextdoor is a gaol that was opened in 1839 and still hold around 60 prisoners.

That design looks like mausoleums I see at a local cemetary. I was surprised to read it was a courthouse. :-)
